Raven fue fundado por los hermanos Mark y John Gallagher. Tocaron su primer concierto en 1975 y amasaron una fiel masa humana en el noreste de Inglaterra. Cuando Neat Records, pioneros del NWOBHM, se fijaron en la banda, John Gallagher (bajo y voz) y Mark Gallagher (primera guitarra) unieron fuerzas con el batería Rob ‘Wacko’ Hunter para formar un potente trio que lanzaría el debut CD ‘Don’t Need Your Money’ en 1980 y el debut LP ‘Rock Until You Drop’ en 1981. El álbum captura a la perfección la energía de sus directos y fue aclamado como magistral por la prensa rock británica, acaparando artículos en Kerrang! y Sounds. Esto llevaría a tours con Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake y Motörhead.
