Since the start of their career, these experimental prog-veterans have kept us on their toes with their new material – blurring boundaries and thrilling both fans and critics. The ‘Sorceress’ album is proof that chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has limitless waves of inspiration to offer. From the opener ‘Persephone’ to ‘The Wilde Flowers’ and ‘Strange Brew’ right up to the twin title tracks ‘Sorceress’ and ‘Sorceress II’, Opeth’s twelfth LP is a magnificent adventure: It shakes things up, it’ll drain all colour from your vision and leave you totally unaware of your surroundings. To record the LP, the band retreated to Rockfield Studios in Wales – the hallowed grounds where Queen, Rush and Judas Priest had recorded some true masterpieces, and Opeth had spent what felt like eternity recording ‘Pale Communion’ with Tom Dalgety. After just 12 days in the studio, they created a magical and powerful album that has bestowed the band’s career with many more musical facets.
